CALAMANSI BLOG #12

JUST ANOTHER "NATIONAL ARTS MONTH" REFLECTION

by W. J. Manares

February has always been a special month for artists, and this year, National Arts Month in Kalibo, Aklan, truly resonated with the power of words and community. It was an incredible privilege to be a part of such meaningful events, celebrating art and extending a hand of hope.

My journey began on February 22, 2026, at Museo it Akean, where I had the honor of participating in a poetry reading with the theme, "With Love, Kalibo." There’s something profoundly moving about speaking in one’s native tongue, and as I read my poems written in Aklanon, I felt the ancient spirit of our language come alive. Aklanon, a truly unique and ancient spoken language in the Philippines, carries a depth that touches the soul. Every word I uttered seemed to echo with the wisdom of generations, creating an undeniable impact on the hearts of the listeners. It was a moment of profound connection, an enduring power of our heritage, all wrapped in the loving embrace of Kalibo.

The artistic journey continued on February 28, 2026, at the enchanting Dantayan Artist Village/Lolo Maning's Farm. This time, I shared the stage with my incredible "partner-in-crime," DORAT (J-Marc Mendoza), for another spoken poetry performance. This wasn't just any performance; it was a benefit gig for a fellow artist, Ronel Nabor. The event was called, "Sining Akeanon x TUGON" spearheaded by the dedicated Aklan Arts & Crafts Society (AACS). Knowing that a portion of the proceeds would assist in his medication filled our hearts with purpose and made every word we spoke even more significant. It’s a truly wonderful thing to be part of such an endeavor, spreading love and hope that can inspire the whole community.

On stage, I performed five healing poems, each one carefully crafted to soothe and uplift, while DORAT masterfully accompanied them with his experimental sounds. The combination created an atmosphere where healing truly enveloped the venue. It was a beautiful synergy of spoken word and music, a testament to the transformative power of art.

These experiences in Kalibo, Aklan, were a powerful reminder of the profound impact words hold in our lives. Words are not just sounds or symbols; they are vessels of emotion, history, and healing. They can transport us, challenge us, comfort us, and connect us in ways that transcend the ordinary. The deliberate crafting and sharing of words offers solace and understanding in a world that often feels chaotic. Whether spoken or written, words have the ability to ignite change, foster empathy, and breathe life into our shared human experience.

Speaking of written words, I’m thrilled to announce that my new poetry collection book, "Don't Try, I Told You I Was Ill" (https://www.ukiyotophilippines.com/product-page/don-t-try-i-told-you-i-was-ill) has recently been published by Ukiyoto Publishing! This collection is a culmination of thoughts, feelings, and observations, and I hope it resonates with you as deeply as these recent performances have resonated with me.

NOTE:

Why "Calamansi" Blog?

I chose the name 'Calamansi Blog' because it embodies the essence of what I want my blog to be. The calamansi, that small but vibrant Philippine lime, symbolizes joy and freshness. Just as the fruit adds a burst of flavor to any dish or drink, I want my blog to bring a fresh and uplifting perspective to the readers.

Beyond its Filipino roots, the name also resonates with me on a deeper level. 'Calamansi' bears a phonetic resemblance to the Indian words 'Kalam' (कलम), meaning 'pen' or 'writing,' and 'Anshi' (अंशी), meaning 'god's gift.' This connection suggests that my writing is more than just words on a page; it's a gift, an inspiration, perhaps even divinely guided.

My 'Calamansi Blog' represents a blend of Filipino zest and a sense of inspired creativity. It's a name that is both memorable and meaningful, reflecting my commitment to sharing content that is joyful, refreshing, and purposeful.
